The Texas Longhorns received a major commitment from the NCAA Transfer Portal on Monday afternoon, with explosive former Houston Cougars playmaker Matthew Golden.
According to On3, Golden is ranked as the portal’s No. 21 player.
He is also the Longhorns’ first commitment through the portal, following the loss of eight players in the last few weeks, most notably backup quarterback Maalik Murphy.
Golden finished his two-year collegiate career with 76 catches for 988 yards and 13 touchdowns. In addition, the Houston native has returned 14 kickoffs for 437 yards and two touchdowns.
Golden, on the other hand, excels on special teams. He averaged 35.6 yards per kickoff return and returned two for touchdowns. Golden could also be effective on punt returns if given the chance.
Golden helped bring the Cougars back from a 21-0 deficit in the second half to tie the game before finishing with seven catches for 88 yards and two touchdowns in Texas’ 31-24 win over Houston on Oct. 21.
The Longhorns were reportedly interested in two transfer receivers, Antwane “Juice” Wells of South Carolina and Deion Burks of Purdue. Wells, on the other hand, is still undecided, while Burks committed to the Oklahoma Sooners on Tuesday.
Golden’s commitment couldn’t have come at a better time for the Horns, who will likely lose their star wide receiver trio of Jordan Whittington, Xavier Worthy, and Adonai Mitchell to the NFL Draft this spring.
