Former Texas DB Jerrin Thompson Transfers To Auburn

Jerrin Thompson, a former Texas Longhorn defensive back, has a new home and a new conference.

It just so happens to be the same conference that the Longhorns will be joining on July 1 alongside Oklahoma.

Thompson committed to Auburn on Monday morning, according to his social media page. He will have one year of eligibility left at The Plains under second-year coach Hugh Freeze.

Thompson, a four-year contributor, was expected to be one of the portal’s most sought-after defensive backs because of his experience. Thompson has appeared in at least ten games every season since his freshman year.

Thompson excelled in coverage on the Forty Acres last season, guiding Texas to its first conference championship since 2009 and a College Football Playoff berth. In 14 games, he had 38 tackles, three interceptions, and seven pass breakups.

Thompson’s best season was in 2022, when he recorded 82 tackles, one interception, and seven pass breakups. He received honorable mention on the All-Big 12 team, as voted on by the league’s coaches.

Auburn, which finished 6-7 under Freeze in Year 1, expressed interest when Thompson entered the portal after losing to Washington in the College Football Playoff semifinal Sugar Bowl. The Tigers lost four defensive backs in the NFL Draft, including cornerback Nehemiah Pritchett and safety Jaylin Simpson.

The Longhorns and Tigers will not meet in 2024 due to the SEC’s rotating schedule. All 14 current programs will face either Texas or Oklahoma in their inaugural season. They’ll face the other opponent in 2025.

Oklahoma faces Auburn, Tennessee, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Alabama, Missouri, and LSU.

Texas’ opponents include Mississippi State, Georgia, Vanderbilt, Florida, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Texas A&M.
