The Pittsburgh Steelers will retain Mike Tomlin around in 2024, as the head coach has assured his squad he expects to remain next season despite reports of stepping down, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
Tomlin allegedly told players and staff at the team’s final meeting that speculation about his departure from the organization is “unfounded” and that he intends to return for the 2024 season.This comes after weeks of stories indicating he could leave the team in the offseason and explore taking a break from football, or that the management will attempt to trade him elsewhere. The most recent rumor came from NBC’s Mike Florio, who indicated he will consult with his family before committing to next season.
He was asked about the situation following the team’s loss to the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card round of the playoffs but walked out of the press conference instead of answering.
Tomlin has one year remaining on his current contract, but Team President Art Rooney II said during training camp this past summer that he expected an extension to get done.
“We’ve done the contract at different points and people seem to read more into that than is warranted,” Rooney told Steelers Nation Radio. “The contract will get done when it needs to get done. As Omar said, I expect Mike to be here a lot longer than the existing contract. We’ll get it done when the time comes.”
Tomlin is set to address the media one last time before the offseason officially begins for the Steelers.
