BREAKING NEWS: Cawley Steps Down as Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Due to

MOSCOW, Idaho – University of Idaho Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Tim Cawley has stepped down to pursue another Division I opportunity.

Cawley, who took over the program in 2014, guided the Vandals to 42 individual conference championships and three Big Sky Outstanding Athletes in Zack Short, Grady Leonard and Mia Sylvester. Five athletes earned Big Sky freshmen of the Year and five athletes earned All-American honors.

“I have truly enjoyed my time here at Idaho,” Cawley said. “I’m grateful to Rob Spear for trusting me with the responsibility to lead these teams and I couldn’t be more thankful to Chris Walsh and Terry Gawlik for the trust and guidance over the past few years. I was lucky to have an amazing staff over my tenure. My biggest thank you goes to all the incredible student-athletes I have had the privilege to work with over my years here. The team culture that they embody is so special and unique.  It always made it enjoyable to come to work.  I’m excited to see the future of Vandal track and field and cross country.”

The Vandal track and field programs were among the leaders at the University of Idaho and among the Big Sky Conference in academic standards. The team went back-to-back with the team academic champions for both the men’s track and cross country programs. Men’s Cross country also had the highest GPA in the country following the 2023 season (3.89) which was also the best in program history.

“We are grateful to coach Cawley for his leadership of our track and field and cross-country programs over the past decade,” Gawlik said. “Coach Cawley and his staff have established a program that is consistently strong both on the track and in the classroom with exceptional student-athletes and a great culture. He has built a solid foundation for the future of Vandal track and field and cross country, and we wish him the best in his new role.”

Cawley’s wife Cathleen also worked as an assistant coach for the Vandals for seven seasons, before moving on to other opportunities. She did return to act as the meet director for the 2023 Big Sky Conference Indoor championship at the P1FCU Kibbie Dome.

Idaho will immediately begin a nation-wide search for a new Director of Track and Field and Cross Country.
