GOOD NEWS: Two Alabama Signees Earn Fifth Star not long ago

Welcome to BamaCentral’s Just a Minute. Our daily video series covering Alabama Crimson Tide athletics.

As the national signing date approaches in two weeks, 247Sports has announced its final rankings for the football Class of 2024.

Unfortunately, Alabama lost two of its signees during the changeover from Nick Saban to Kalen DeBoer. However, according to 247Sports, the Crimson Tide still ranks third in the class, with 23 players.

For many, reranking the prospects is unimportant, but for two Crimson Tide signees, it represents the hard work they put in during their senior season of high school football.

Defensive backs Zabien Brown and Zay Mincey were both upgraded from 4-star prospects to 5-star prospects, giving the Crimson Tide three total 5-star prospects in the class (including defensive back Jaylen Mbakwe).

The quality additions in the defensive backfield are critical for Alabama, which has suffered huge losses in the transfer portal and the upcoming NFL Draft. Alabama’s primary cornerbacks Kool-Aid McKinstry and Terrion Arnold both entered the draft, while vital players Caleb Downs and Trey Amos left Tuscaloosa via the portal.

Malachi Moore becomes the Tide’s most seasoned secondary player, and Saban praised the Hewitt-Trussville Husky last season for his ability to communicate and keep the back end on track.

While many are concerned about the talent lost during the summer, it’s evident that the previous staff did an excellent job of identifying young players who can contribute.

In fact, in addition to the three incoming 5-star freshman prospects, the Tide signed Southern Cal cornerback Domani Jackson from the transfer portal.

The Crimson Tide’s back end may be inexperienced overall, but with the combination of young talent and Moore’s senior guidance, the secondary might still be a strength for the 2024 Alabama football team.
