washington state close to new deal with free agent Jaylen Watson

DETROIT, Mich. – During the final day of the 2024 NFL Draft, three Washington State Cougars learned where their pro careers would begin.

Safety Jaden Hicks was drafted in the fourth round, 133rd overall, by the reigning Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs. He’ll join a stacked roster that includes a familiar Cougar football alum in CB Jaylen Watson.

Hicks spent two years in Pullman with 155 tackles and was second on the team in tackles along with two interceptions this season.

EDGE Brennan Jackson was drafted in the fifth round, 154th overall, by the Los Angeles Rams and will return to his home state of California. Jackson had 20 total sacks in his career including three touchdowns and four fumble recoveries just this season.

Cornerback Chau Smith-Wade was also drafted in the fifth round and not long after Jackson as the 157th overall pick by the Carolina Panthers. Smith-Wade missed the final five games of the Cougar’s season, but started the first seven games and had 20 pass deflections, not to mention a stand-out performance in the Senior Bowl.
