Seniors Reveal Emotions Behind Last Texas Longhorns Home Game of 2024 Season
AUSTIN, TX — As the Texas Longhorns football team prepares for its final home game of the 2024 season, emotions are running high among the senior players, many of whom will be stepping off the field at Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium for the last time in their collegiate careers.
For these seniors, Saturday’s game against their Big 12 rivals is not just another contest—it’s a culmination of years of hard work, growth, and unforgettable memories. After months of preparation, relentless practice sessions, and countless hours spent in the weight room, the players reflected on what this final home game means to them.
“I can’t believe it’s already here,” said senior linebacker Jake Martinez, his voice filled with emotion. “It feels like just yesterday I was a freshman, taking my first steps onto this field. Now, to have one last chance to play in front of our fans, in this incredible stadium… it’s surreal.”
Senior quarterback Cole Thompson echoed his teammate’s sentiments, admitting that the weight of the moment is starting to set in. “You don’t realize how special this place is until you’re walking off it for the last time,” Thompson said. “The fans, the traditions, the atmosphere—it’s something I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life.”
Many of the seniors spoke about their gratitude for the Texas football program, which has been a constant source of support, discipline, and camaraderie over the years. Wide receiver David Simmons, who has made a significant impact on the field, spoke about the bonds formed with his teammates. “We’re more than just a team. We’re a family,” Simmons said. “We’ve all been through highs and lows together, and that’s what makes this moment so special.”
Head coach Steve Sarkisian, who has been with the program for several seasons, praised the seniors for their leadership and commitment to the team. “These guys have been the backbone of our program,” Sarkisian said. “Their work ethic, dedication, and perseverance have set a standard for the younger guys to follow. It’s going to be tough to see them go, but they’ve made their mark on this program forever.”
As the game day approaches, the excitement in Austin is palpable. Fans are expected to fill the stadium to capacity, eager to send off these senior players with a victory that caps off their unforgettable careers at Texas. For the seniors, the game represents not only a final chapter at home but also a moment to appreciate the journey, the friendships, and the memories that will last long after their time in burnt orange comes to an end.
“The most important thing for me is that I leave it all on the field,” said senior defensive lineman Marcus Wallace. “We’ve worked so hard for this moment. It’s our time to give everything we’ve got, for ourselves and for all the fans who’ve supported us along the way.”
As the final whistle blows on the 2024 home season, the emotions of the Texas seniors will undoubtedly run deep, marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of new adventures, both on and off the field.
