Nashville — New Tennessee Titans coach Brian Callahan, whose excitement for football brightened an otherwise dreary Thursday, described his first head coaching post as a wonderful honour and duty. He vowed to work with general manager Ran Carthon to establish a squad that is resilient and relentless.
“I want to establish a culture of high standards and clear communication,” said Callahan, 39, who agreed to a five-year contract to help lead the Titans’ turnaround. “Everyone will be held to a high standard. I’m looking for players, coaches, and staff who want to be held to the highest standards.
During a 40-minute Q&A with reporters:
Callahan stated that there was an instant connection with Ran Carthon, the newly elevated executive vice president/general manager. Owner Amy Adams Strunk stated that during their first Zoom interview, Callahan and Carthon hit it off so fast that they skipped standard questions and went straight to player evaluations.
Callahan affirmed that he will call the offensive plays next year, stating that he has already met with quarterback Will Levis, lauded his athletic abilities, and looks forward to working together.
In developing the organization’s personality, Callahan referenced Liverpool football coach Jurgen Klopp: When you agree on a similar goal and strive towards it together, you can achieve something quite extraordinary.
And he was organising Titans supporters to turn Nissan Stadium into one of the NFL’s most dreaded venues.
Callahan takes over the Titans following five successful seasons as the Cincinnati Bengals’ offensive coordinator and quarterback whisperer under Joe Burrow.
Callahan’s wife, Allyson, and their children, Norah and Ronan, were in attendance Thursday at Ascension Saint Thomas Sports Park, as were two of his former coaches, Mark Panella and Patrick Walsh, who mentored him as a high school quarterback and young assistant coach.
“(Patrick) gave me my first coaching and teaching position in 2008. So I thought it was crucial that he be present for this,” Callahan stated. “He travelled all the way from California and took the redeye last night to get here, so thank you. He’s one of my best friends and wonderful mentors, and I wouldn’t be sitting here in front of you without his love, support, and wisdom, which he’s always provided for me.
