He agreed on a five-years deal to join Bulldogs

The Canterbury Bulldogs have scored a significant coup by signing standout five-eighth Matt Burton to a five-year contract.

In the first significant signing announcement of 2023, Burton has agreed to a new contract with the Bulldogs that would keep him with the club until at least the end of 2027.

Burton’s first deal with the Bulldogs was worth approximately $500,000 each season. He signed a three-year contract, but the final year (2024) was an option in his benefit.

Matt Burton has signed a five year deal.

The Bulldogs are anticipated to dramatically enhance Burton’s 2023 and 2024 contracts and extend him for another three years.

Burton became a free agent on November 1 and was entitled to negotiate with rival teams for the 2024 season.

His agent, David Riolo, reportedly put his name in an email to all teams listing his off-contract players. That’s no longer the case.

The Bulldogs have always seen the Dubbo product as the club’s future, and the new contract reflects general manager Phil Gould’s assessment of Burton.

The 22-year-old has accomplished everything in the sport at such a young age. He won a premiership with the Panthers in his final season before joining the Bulldogs, and he has since represented NSW and Australia.
