The Philadelphia Phillies have spent much of the offseason evaluating their long-term plans at third base, particularly regarding Alec Bohm. The former All-Star is entering the final year of his contract, and there has been ongoing speculation that the organization could eventually part ways with him.
Earlier in the offseason, the belief was that Philadelphia might consider moving Bohm if it created an opportunity to pursue high-profile infield upgrades such as Alex Bregman or Bo Bichette.

MLB insider Jon Morosi explained that any decision to trade Bohm would likely hinge on the Phillies securing a clear improvement at the position.
“If the Phillies were to move Bohm, in my judgment, it would have to be because they believe there’s a real chance of landing a player like Bregman or perhaps using Bo Bichette at a position other than shortstop,” Morosi said. “There are different ways they could strengthen the roster, but it would require a clear upgrade before making that kind of move.”
While Philadelphia ultimately missed out on those free-agent targets, the franchise made a massive investment elsewhere, locking in ace left-hander Jesús Luzardo to a long-term deal.
According to Jeff Passan, the Phillies reached a blockbuster agreement with Luzardo on a five-year, $135 million extension that runs through the 2031 season, with a club option for 2032. The deal secures the star pitcher a year before he was set to reach free agency.
With that major financial commitment now on the books, the franchise’s future payroll structure could make a long-term reunion with Bohm increasingly unlikely.
FanSided’s Christopher Kline suggested the extension may effectively signal the end of Bohm’s tenure in Philadelphia.

Kline noted that while Bohm’s production dipped slightly last season, he still delivered back-to-back 97-RBI seasons in 2023 and 2024, demonstrating his ability to generate steady contact in the heart of the lineup. Even so, the Phillies may be looking for more power production from the position moving forward.
For now, the Phillies appear to have several options. They could explore trade opportunities during the season, or simply allow Bohm to play out the final year of his deal before potentially departing in free agency.
