If Bill Belichick stays without a team this offseason and must wait until 2025 to return to coaching, the New York Giants should not be overlooked.
According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, “it’s been long believed he would love to go back to the place where he won a pair of Super Bowls as defensive coordinator, and because the team took a nosedive in 2023 after a playoff berth in 2022.”
Belichick worked as the Giants’ defensive coordinator under the renowned Bill Parcells from 1985 to 1990, and he was also on the coaching staff from 1979 to 1990. He went on to serve as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns (1991-95) and, more popularly, the New England Patriots (2000-23).
For the Giants, another dismal season in the Big Apple might mark the end of current coach Brian Daboll. After making the playoffs in his debut season in 2022, the Giants finished 6-11 last year, sinking after a 2-8 start.
It’s unclear whether Belichick wants to return to coaching after a potential season off. He’s 71, after all, and retirement has its advantages. However, if the Giants have a vacancy and he is still interested in coaching, he would be a good fit.
