At this point in the offseason, the Philadelphia Phillies are unlikely to do anything other than sign Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery, which would generate enormous headlines.
They were interested in some of the bigger stars in the relief pool, but couldn’t sign Robert Stephenson, Hector Neris, Jordan Hicks, Nick Martinez, and others.
It’ll be interesting to see how the Phillies spend the rest of the offseason. They allegedly are interested in two specific solutions.
This offseason, one of Philadelphia’s erstwhile bullpen pieces joined the defending World Series champs.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Texas Rangers have agreed to a one-year contract worth approximately $11-12 million with David Robertson.
The right-hander first joined the Phillies in 2019, signing a two-year, $23 million contract. However, he only made it until mid-April that year before sustaining a flexor strain in his elbow, which required Tommy John surgery to correct.
He played in seven games for Philadelphia after missing the whole 2020 season.
Robertson returned in 2022, when the Phillies dealt Ben Brown to the Chicago Cubs for the reliever.
In 22 games, he had a 2.70 ERA and six saves.
Philadelphia let him depart in free agency, and he remained in the NL East division, spending the first half of the 2023 season with the New York Mets until being transferred to the Miami Marlins at the deadline.
