The Green Bay Packers have recently faced several setbacks involving key players:
Jaire Alexander’s Injury and Potential Release: Star cornerback Jaire Alexander suffered a posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injury during a Week 8 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2024 season. After attempting a brief return in Week 11, he experienced knee swelling, leading to arthroscopic surgery on January 1, 2025. Consequently, the Packers placed him on injured reserve on January 4, 2025. Alexander’s limited participation, appearing in only seven games during the 2024 season, has raised concerns about his future with the team. Reports suggest that the Packers are considering releasing him, which would result in an $18.1 million dead cap charge if executed before a post-June 1 designation.
Mason Crosby’s Retirement: Longtime kicker Mason Crosby announced his retirement as a member of the Packers. Drafted in 2007, Crosby became the franchise leader in points (1,918), field goals (395), and extra points (733). After a brief stint with the New York Giants in 2023, he chose to retire, marking the end of a notable career.
T.J. Slaton’s Departure: Defensive tackle T.J. Slaton signed a two-year, $15 million contract with the Cincinnati Bengals. Originally drafted by the Packers in 2021, Slaton played 68 games with 36 starts, including all 17 games in the past season. His exit leaves a gap in the Packers’ defensive line.
Injuries to Eric Stokes and Darnell Savage: The Packers’ secondary suffered additional blows with cornerback Eric Stokes and safety Darnell Savage placed on injured reserve. Stokes, returning from a previous foot injury, hurt his left hamstring after just four plays in his comeback game. Savage sustained a calf injury in the same game. Both are expected to miss at least four games, further straining the team’s defensive depth.
These developments present significant challenges for the Packers as they prepare for the upcoming season.
