Tennessee Baseball Overpowers Alabama State with Explosive Fourth Inning
The Tennessee Volunteers secured a commanding 10–2 victory over Alabama State on Tuesday night at Lindsey Nelson Stadium, propelled by an explosive eight-run fourth inning and a standout performance from freshman Chris Newstrom.
After three scoreless innings, the Vols’ offense ignited in the fourth. Reese Chapman initiated the rally with a towering 405-foot home run to right field. Chris Newstrom followed with a solo shot to left, marking his first of two extra-base hits in the inning. Dean Curley then added a two-run homer, his 10th of the season, tying for the hardest-hit Tennessee home run this year with a 110 mph exit velocity.
Newstrom continued his impressive performance with a two-out RBI double later in the inning and capped his night with an RBI infield single, finishing 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Over his last four games, Newstrom is 9-for-13 with multiple hits in each, solidifying his role in the lineup.
On the mound, right-hander AJ Russell delivered two efficient innings, retiring six of seven batters and striking out two. His fastball consistently reached 93–95 mph, showcasing his growing role in the pitching rotation.
With this win, Tennessee improves to 25–6 on the season. The Vols will next face Ole Miss in a three-game series starting Friday night in Oxford, with the opener scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET on SEC Network+.
