BREAKING NEWS: Texas in Tears — In Loving Memory of Steve Sloan

Texas is mourning the loss of a football icon. Steve Sloan, former Texas Tech head coach and national champion quarterback at Alabama, passed away on April 14, 2024, at the age of 79. A beloved leader, mentor, and legend in the college football world, Sloan’s impact stretched far beyond the gridiron.

From Crimson Tide Glory to Red Raider Heart

Steve Sloan’s journey began under the spotlight of college football greatness. As the quarterback for Alabama under the legendary Bear Bryant, Sloan helped lead the Crimson Tide to the 1965 national championship. His poise and leadership earned him All-American honors, SEC MVP, and the prestigious Sammy Baugh Trophy.

But Texas would come to know a different side of Sloan — not just the champion, but the coach and mentor.

Texas Tech’s Guiding Light

Sloan took over the Texas Tech Red Raiders in 1975 and quickly became a transformative figure. In 1976, he led the team to a 10-win season — a milestone that would be remembered for decades. That year, Tech claimed a share of the Southwest Conference title, and fans rallied behind a new era of Red Raider football.

Players and coaches remember him not only for the wins but for the way he made them believe in something bigger. “He was like a father to me,” said Rodney Allison, Sloan’s former quarterback. “I named my son after him.”

A Legacy Beyond the Scoreboard

After Texas Tech, Sloan went on to coach at Ole Miss and Duke, and later served as athletic director at several universities. But no matter where he went, he carried with him a rare mix of strength, humility, and class that made him unforgettable.

Family and Final Farewell

Steve Sloan is survived by his wife of 55 years, Brenda, and their son, Stephen Jr. Funeral arrangements are forthcoming, with the family requesting privacy during this time of loss.

Today, Texas stands still. The stadium lights may dim, but Steve Sloan’s legacy will forever shine. A coach. A champion. A gentleman. Rest in peace, Coach Sloan — the Lone Star State will never forget you.
