BREAKING NEWS: LSU Tigers in Tears — Remembering Wayde Sims
The LSU Tigers basketball community is mourning deeply as they honor the life and legacy of former player Wayde Sims, whose tragic death in 2018 continues to weigh heavily on hearts across Baton Rouge and beyond.
Wayde, just 20 years old at the time, was fatally shot near Southern University, sending shockwaves through the LSU campus. Known for his powerful presence on the court and his infectious energy off it, Wayde was more than just a basketball player — he was a teammate, a friend, a son, and a symbol of Tiger pride.
In a moving candlelight vigil held on LSU’s campus, family, teammates, and coaches gathered to remember Wayde. Emotional speeches, shared memories, and the release of 44 balloons — representing his jersey number — created a powerful tribute to his short but impactful life.
LSU recently honored Wayde again during a home game against Alabama State on what would have been his 26th birthday. The night was filled with emotion as his father, Wayne Sims — also a former Tiger who wore No. 44 — was recognized at halftime. Fans received 88 commemorative basketballs, a nod to the father-son legacy.
Though he may be gone, Wayde Sims’ presence remains strong. His legacy lives on through the Wayde Sims Foundation, which supports youth and community programs throughout Baton Rouge.
As the LSU Tigers press forward, they do so with Wayde’s name etched into their hearts — a lasting symbol of unity, strength, and Tiger spirit.
Rest in peace, Wayde. You are forever a Tiger.
