In a significant addition to the Indiana Hoosiers, former Sam Houston State guard Lamar Wilkerson has committed to Indiana, bypassing offers from several programs, including the Kentucky Wildcats. The news, first reported by Joe Tipton of On3, marks a major win for new Indiana head coach Darian DeVries.
Wilkerson, a 6-foot-5 junior from Ashdown, Arkansas, comes off an impressive season where he averaged 20.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.1 steals per game. His shooting percentages were equally remarkable, hitting 47.7% from the field and 44.5% from beyond the arc. His scoring versatility and ability to perform under pressure made him one of the most sought-after transfers in the portal this offseason.
For Indiana, Wilkerson’s commitment signals the start of a new era under DeVries, who joined the program after a successful stint at Drake. The Hoosiers have struggled to regain their former glory, and landing a player of Wilkerson’s caliber is a step in the right direction. DeVries aims to rebuild the program, and Wilkerson’s scoring ability, leadership, and veteran presence will be pivotal both on the court and in the locker room.
Wilkerson’s choice of Indiana reflects the belief top-tier talent has in DeVries’ vision for the program. The guard’s role as a go-to scorer and his ability to impact games on both ends of the floor make him a potential game-changer for the Hoosiers in the 2024-25 season.
Meanwhile, Kentucky continues its search for backcourt reinforcements. Under head coach Mark Pope, the Wildcats have made strides in recruitment and transfer activity but missed out on Wilkerson’s services this time. The program will now turn its attention to other targets as it aims to build a roster capable of contending nationally.
