Patrick Mahomes Donates $10 Million to Launch NIL Fund for Texas Tech Athletes NFL superstar invests in Red Raiders’ future, creating one of the largest athlete support funds in the Big 12.

landmark moment for Texas Tech Athletics, NFL MVP and Red Raider legend Patrick Mahomes has announced a $10 million donation to establish a comprehensive Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) fund to support current and future student-athletes. The fund, dubbed the “Mahomes Legacy Fund,” will be used to help Texas Tech athletes capitalize on NIL opportunities while receiving professional branding, marketing, and financial literacy training.

Mahomes, who starred at quarterback for Texas Tech from 2014 to 2016 before becoming the face of the Kansas City Chiefs, said the donation is his way of giving back to a school and community that “shaped who I am.” “Texas Tech believed in me when not a lot of people did,” Mahomes said in a video announcement. “This is about making sure today’s Red Raiders get the same chance to grow, succeed, and build a future—on and off the field.”

The Mahomes Legacy Fund will be managed in partnership with the university and a national NIL collective, ensuring that funds are distributed responsibly and equitably across sports. The initiative includes a mentorship program connecting athletes with Tech alumni in various industries, giving student-athletes access to guidance and career networks far beyond their playing days.

Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt called the donation “transformational” and “a defining moment for our program.” He noted that the fund will position Texas Tech among the top programs nationally when it comes to supporting athletes in the NIL era. “This isn’t just about dollars,” Hocutt said. “It’s about Patrick showing our student-athletes what it looks like to lead with vision and heart.”
