The crash took place at approximately 8:45 a.m. on Thursday, June 16, when a twin-engine Piper PA-31 Navajo aircraft was approaching the airport. According to Penn State University, the plane went down in a densely wooded area about one mile east of the airport, near Rock Road and Barns Lane. The pilot and a passenger were confirmed dead at the scene by Centre County Coroner Scott Sayers. The identities of the victims have been released: the pilot was Gary Orner from White Oak, Pennsylvania, and the passenger was Dr. Robert C. Arffa from Pittsburgh.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has initiated an investigation into the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports indicate that the aircraft was performing an instrument approach procedure to land at the airport when the incident occurred. The NTSB is reviewing air traffic control recordings, radar data, and other relevant information to determine the factors that led to the crash.

The crash has deeply affected the local community. Penn State University and local officials have expressed their condolences to the families of the victims. The university has also pledged full cooperation with the ongoing investigation.

In the aftermath of the crash, portions of Rock Road and Barns Lane were temporarily closed to facilitate emergency response and investigation efforts. Rock Road has since been reopened, while Barns Lane remains closed to local traffic. The University Park Airport was closed following the crash but reopened at approximately 10:30 a.m.
