BREAKING NEWS: Alabama Head Coach Kalen DeBoer Passes Away at 50

The University of Alabama community is mourning the unexpected death of head football coach Kalen DeBoer, who passed away at the age of 50. The news was confirmed early this morning by university officials. The cause of death has not yet been publicly released.

DeBoer was appointed as the Crimson Tide’s head coach in January 2024 following the retirement of legendary coach Nick Saban. In his short time with the program, he earned the respect of players, staff, and fans for his leadership, integrity, and passion for the game.

In a statement, Alabama Athletic Director Greg Byrne said,

> “Kalen was more than just a coach—he was a mentor, a leader, and a man of tremendous character. His impact on our program was immediate, and his loss is immeasurable. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife Emily, their children, and the entire DeBoer family.”

DeBoer previously coached at the University of Washington, where he led the Huskies to a national title appearance in the 2023 season. His coaching career began at the University of Sioux Falls, where he won three NAIA national championships.

The university has announced that grief counseling and support services will be made available to players, staff, and students. Interim coaching arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.

Further details, including memorial services, will be shared as they become available.
