JUST IN: Four Officers Killed in Deadly Charlotte Shooting

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — April 29, 2024

A tragic shooting in east Charlotte has left four law enforcement officers dead and several others injured in one of the deadliest attacks on police in recent U.S. history.

The violence erupted as officers from a U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force attempted to serve a warrant at a residence in the Shannon Park neighborhood. The suspect, 39-year-old Terry Clark Hughes Jr., opened fire with an AR-15-style rifle, sparking a 17-minute shootout.

The officers killed have been identified as:

Joshua Eyer – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department

Thomas M. Weeks Jr. – U.S. Marshals Task Force

Samuel “Sam” Poloche – North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections

William “Alden” Elliott – North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections

Three other officers were injured, with one still in critical condition. The suspect was shot and killed during the confrontation. Authorities confirmed Hughes acted alone and that there was no crossfire among officers.

Two women inside the home at the time of the shooting were taken into custody but are not believed to have been involved in the attack.

This incident marks the worst loss of life for law enforcement in the U.S. since the 2016 Dallas shooting. In the wake of the tragedy, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation has pledged to pay off the mortgages of the fallen officers’ families.

President Biden is expected to meet with the victims’ families on May 2 to offer condolences.
