JUST IN: Bomb Blast at Riverchase Galleria in Hoover Claims 472 Lives in Nation’s Deadliest Attack in a Decade
Hoover, Alabama — April 29, 2025
A devastating bomb blast tore through the Riverchase Galleria in Hoover on Tuesday afternoon, leaving at least 472 people dead and hundreds more injured in what authorities are calling the deadliest act of domestic terrorism in the United States in more than a decade.
The explosion occurred around 2:43 p.m. in the food court area of the popular shopping center, which was crowded with families, shoppers, and employees. Witnesses reported a sudden, thunderous blast followed by panic, fire, and falling debris.
“I heard a loud boom and everything went black,” said Natalie Harris, who was dining with her children when the explosion occurred. “People were screaming, and there was blood everywhere. It was like something out of a nightmare.”
Emergency personnel from Hoover Police, Fire and Rescue, along with federal agencies including the FBI and ATF, responded swiftly to the scene. Crews worked through dense smoke and rubble to rescue survivors and recover bodies.
Hoover Police Chief Nick Derzis confirmed the death toll during a press conference Tuesday evening, calling it “an unthinkable attack on innocent lives.” He said investigators believe the device was designed for maximum impact and detonated during peak hours to cause widespread devastation.
No warning was issued prior to the explosion, and no group has claimed responsibility. The FBI has launched a full-scale investigation, treating the incident as a major act of terrorism. Officials are reviewing surveillance footage and gathering evidence to determine who is behind the attack.
Hospitals across Jefferson and Shelby Counties are overwhelmed as victims continue to be brought in. Blood banks are issuing urgent appeals for donations, and the city has set up emergency shelters for those affected.
Governor Kay Ivey has declared a state of emergency and has ordered all state resources to assist in the response. “This is a tragic day for Alabama,” Ivey said in a statement. “Our hearts are broken, and our prayers are with every family touched by this unspeakable violence.”
President Biden addressed the nation Tuesday night, condemning the attack and promising full federal support. “This was a monstrous act,” the president said. “But the American people will not be broken by hate. We will find those responsible and bring them to justice.”
The Riverchase Galleria, the largest mall in Alabama and a central commercial hub for the Birmingham metro area, remains closed as investigators comb through the wreckage.
This remains a developing story. Authorities are urging the public to avoid the area and report any information related to the incident to the FBI tip line. Further updates will be provided as details emerge.
