Good morning, my name is Andrew Fantucchio. It’s Tuesday, December 19, and here’s what’s happening in the NHL today.
The Ottawa Senators announced on Monday that they had removed head coach D.J. Smith of his duties and appointed Jacques Martin as his interim successor behind the bench.
Smith was the Senators’ head coach for four and a half seasons, although the team failed to make the playoffs while undergoing a lengthy reconstruction.
With Ottawa opening the year 11-15-0, good enough for dead last in the Eastern Conference, Smith was the fourth head coach in the NHL to be dismissed this season, and the fifth if you add Mike Babcock, who was let go by the Columbus Blue Jackets earlier this season.
Martin replaces Smith, who already has a long experience with the Senators organisation.
