Kansas baseball, in its second season under head coach Dan Fitzgerald, enters the season with hopes of making the playoffs after a better 2023 campaign. at the opening game of a three-game series at Corpus Christi, Texas, the Jayhawks fell to Illinois-Chicago 11-9, setting the tone for a rough start.

Although sophomore second baseman Kodey Shojinaga, a preseason All-Big 12 selection, gave the Jayhawks a significant lift with five RBIs and two home runs, it wasn’t enough to secure a victory. Janson Reeder, a senior designated hitter, was also picked to the squad in addition to Shojinaga. In school history, these two are only the third and fourth preseason All-Big 12 choices.Shojinaga was the Big 12 Co-Freshman of the Year and a freshman All-American last season. Along with leading the team in hitting average, hits, multi-hit games, on-base percentage, and OPS, he was also a unanimous choice for the Big-12 Freshman team. In league games, he leads the conference in hits (41) and batting average (.418).
After junior first baseman Ben Hartl flew out to right field and Reeder went down swinging, Shojinaga doubled to start Kansas’ offense for the season. However, he was unable to score. The senior outfielder Lenny Ashby flied out to center and Hartl popped out to the second baseman on a 3-2 count, but Kansas was unable to muster a run after the second baseman singled and Reeder walked in the third inning.
