On the eve of the NRL season, Canterbury and front-row player Samuel Hughes reached a deal, as stated by Phil Gould, the head of football for the club.
After impressing during a recent trial victory over the Storm with his height and power through the middle, the 23-year-old has become one of the team’s top young players.
Hughes’ contract was supposed to expire at the conclusion of this season, however Gould disclosed on Wide World of Sports’ Six Tackles With Gus that he will really stay with the Bulldogs.
“Sammy is a decent child; I’ve liked him since the moment he entered the building, but he’s only suffered injuries. Prior to this preseason, Sammy had suffered a back injury after tripping over a railing during a rock concert.
When he approached us during the end of the 2022 season, I wondered, “Who is this? He was a huge, towering, aggressive child with exceptionally good movement. Wow, I thought, he’s a hope.
“We left him because he was wasting our time all year, but he trained really well in the off-season, so maybe he gets back on track.
“He trialled well the other night, but it was virtually only a reserve grade trial.”
In the team’s second preseason game against Cronulla on Friday night, Hughes will start from the bench to gain an advantage against Liam Knight, who the Dogs have demoted to the NSW Cup in order to increase his match fitness.
