Prior to the Iowa football team’s Saturday game against Northwestern at Chicago’s Wrigley Field, this week has been anything but typical. On Monday, interim athletic director Beth Goetz, who has only been in the role for three months, declared that Hawkeye offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz will not be rejoining the coaching staff in 2024. Ferentz, a former player for Iowa and the son of longtime head coach Kirk Ferentz, will stay in the role for the remainder of the season, which includes the bowl game.
The Associated Press reports that Iowa has averaged 320.2 yards and 25.3 points per game since Brian Ferentz became coordinator in 2017, placing the team 131st and 100th in the FBS accordingly. Iowa leads the Big Ten in both scoring and total yards per game this season, averaging 19.5 points and 232.4 yards per game.
Regarding the announcement, she remarked, “I think it’s difficult anytime people are involved in any decision.” And people who are really important to our university, so that’s always a part of the picture. Ultimately, though, you have to decide what you believe is best for the program or institution, so you do your best.
