According to FanSided writer Christopher Kline, the Phillies may have a clear answer to the Suárez situation. He predicts the team will pursue Framber Valdez, widely regarded as the top remaining ace on the free-agent market.
Suárez’s exit leaves a noticeable gap in the starting rotation. While top prospect Andrew Painter is expected to compete for a rotation role during spring training, relying on both an inexperienced rookie and veteran Taijuan Walker to start regularly could be risky. Kline argues that adding Valdez would immediately stabilize the staff, creating a formidable postseason rotation alongside Zack Wheeler, Cristopher Sánchez, and Jesús Luzardo, with Aaron Nola slotting in comfortably as a low-pressure fifth starter. Such a move could also allow the Phillies to manage Painter’s development more carefully.
Valdez had an uneven 2025 campaign, finishing with a 13–11 record, a 3.66 ERA, 187 strikeouts, and a 1.245 WHIP over 192 innings. However, his performance was dominant for much of the season, as he posted an 11-4 record with a 2.62 ERA and 141 strikeouts through the first two-thirds of the year.
Although Valdez is currently projected to command a six-year, $199 million contract, the slow-moving free-agent market could work in Philadelphia’s favor. With limited competition for his services, the Phillies may be able to sign him for less than expected.
If Valdez remains unsigned a bit longer, Philadelphia could gain leverage in negotiations making now an ideal time for the Phillies to make a strong push to bring the former All-Star and World Series champion into their rotation.
