The addition of Cody Bellinger appeared to have sealed the deal after a protracted and otherwise unremarkable summer, and in less than a month, Chicago Cubs fans will witness a team that has undergone significant change on the field in preparation for Opening Day.
The Cubs’ offseason has been highlighted by the addition of Cody Bellinger, starter Shota Imanaga, and former Astros reliever Hector Neris. In 2023, the Cubs missed the postseason by just one game.
A week into spring training, teams all around the league still have room to grow, with third baseman Matt Chapman leading the list of elite free agents who are still unsigned.
Chapman, who won his fourth career Gold Glove last year, seems like an ideal fit for the Cubs as he looks to sign a multi-year contract. However, the franchise does not have a clear plan for third base in 2024, nor does it need another power bat.
Chapman is a mixed bag offensively and is about to enter his age-31 season, so his desire for a long-term contract and the Cubs’ long-term goals aren’t exactly aligned.
