The NHL has suspended Matt Rempe of the New York Rangers for four games for elbowing Jonas Siegenthaler of the New Jersey Devils in the face.
Rempe only made his big-league debut last month during an outdoor game against the New York Islanders. This is his first suspension in 10 NHL games.
Rempe’s maximum suspension would have been five games because he was not granted an in-person hearing with the NHL’s Department of Player Safety.
Even still, four games for a first-time NHL suspension is a lot. Rempe was given a game misconduct penalty for his elbow during the match on Monday.
Rempe was given four games due to him going out of his way to make contact with Siegenthaler.
Rempe has now been ejected from both meetings in his career against the Devils, with the other as a result of a hit to Nathan Bastian.
