Which players from Super Bowl LVIII were the best recruits? Before the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers take on each other in Las Vegas on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET on CBS and Paramount+, this is one of the most talked-about questions.
Rankings in recruitment are obviously important, especially in the Super Bowl.
32 percent of the players that the 49ers and Chiefs currently have on their rosters were formerly rated as four- or five-star prospects by 247Sports.
Although that may not seem like a large amount, take this into account: Assuming 2,500 recruits per cycle, only one out of every 12 FBS signees annually is rated as a four-star prospect right out of high school. That is eight percent. Nonetheless, 32% of players in the Super Bowl were formerly top-tier recruits.
When you factor in five-star prospects, the stats appear much more impressive. Each recruiting cycle, there are just 32 of them, accounting for 1.25% of all FBS signees annually. Still, there are 6.6% of Super Bowl players who were formerly five-star prospects. Thus, compared to other recruit types, five-star athletes have a greater than six-fold chance of participating in this Super Bowl.
Chris Jones, an All-Pro defensive lineman for the Chiefs, and the 49ers are two previous five-star players.
