JUST IN: Colts Compartmentalising after his unexpected exist.

The Indianapolis Colts continued to re-sign players, retaining an athletic defensive lineman.

Bryan signed a one-year contract with the Colts in 2023 for $3.51 million, according to Spotrac. Indy expected more from Bryan but did not see it on the pitch. Bryan, who took over for Grover Stewart on the inside, struggled with run defence and pass-rushing. According to Pro Football Focus, Bryan had a pass-rush grade of 68.7 but only two sacks. His run defence was awful, totaling 43.7.

Although PFF is not everything, the grades provided are accurate. Bryan isn’t an effective run defender and should be deployed solely in pass-rushing situations. At the end of 2023, Bryan played more run defence snaps (190) than pass-rushing (149), putting him in more opportunities to lose than win and revealing his weaknesses.

Re-signing an unproductive defensive tackle is an odd decision and a poor use of money. New defensive line coach Charlie Partridge may be able to help Bryan improve, but he has been in the league for six years and is an uninspiring defender. We’ll see if Bryan can bounce back in 2024. It’s intriguing that Bryan was signed before safety Julian Blackmon. Free agency is heating up, and the Colts have important decisions to make ahead of the draft.
