Michael Burton, a former Rutgers fullback, will continue his NFL career after signing a one-year contract with the Denver Broncos. Coincidentally, another former Scarlet Knight, Jason McCourty, tweeted about the signing.
“Mike Burton agreed to terms to go back to the #Broncos on a one year deal,” McCourty wrote on his Twitter account. “Burton offers plenty of versatility as a fullback and key contributor on special teams.”
Burton joined the Broncos last season, after his old head coach Sean Peyton took over. Burton signed a guaranteed deal last year, but the terms of his new one-year contract are yet to be released. Last season, Burton rushed seven times for nine yards, the most of which came in short-yardage situations.
Burton was named an alternate for the 2023 Pro Bowl in recognition of his overall season achievement. He has spent nine seasons in the NFL, with spells with the Kansas City Chiefs, New Orleans Saints, Washington Commanders, Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, and Denver Broncos. He was a fifth-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft and has played at least 15 games in seven of his nine seasons.
Burton arrived to Rutgers as a preferred walk-on in the class of 2011 from West Morris Regional High School in Long Valley, New Jersey. He ascended up the ranks and was named captain before his last season in 2014. He continues to return to Rutgers.
