The Professional Hockey Writers Association announced the nominations for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy on Friday, including Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby.
The trophy is presented to the athlete who best displays perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to the game. Masterton is the only player in NHL history to have died as a consequence of an on-ice injury.
A player from each squad is nominated by the local PHWA branch.
Crosby is defying aging with his performance this season. The 36-year-old is leading the Penguins with 39 goals and 45 assists in 76 games, securing a 19th consecutive season of averaging one point per game, tying Wayne Gretzky’s record.
