Fremantle have advised fans not to expect players to return from concussions after the required 12 days off, citing the cases of forward Sam Switkowski and draftee Odin Jones as examples of everyone’s increased caution.
While crucial forward Jye Amiss missed only one game due to a concussion suffered during the western derby, Switkowski hasn’t played since April 13, and Jones only made his WAFL debut this year after an incident during the preseason.
Fremantle football manager Joe Brierty said the extra time a player like Switkowski has spent on the sidelines should not be a cause for concern.
He explained that Switkowski’s delay was related to how he felt after finishing training sessions.
“(Before the Bulldogs game), he trained through the entire session and it was only the last 24 hours where he started to have a few minor symptoms,” Brierty told the media.
Then this week it was more the high contact stuff where he felt a little bit uncomfortable. He trained on Saturday morning in Perth and we’ll look for him to complete a main training session going into Sydney and hopefully he’s available.
