JUST NOW: Brooklyn has paid crazy money to retain him worth over

As the Brooklyn Nets try to figure out what their next steps will be as a franchise, one big question has remained at the forefront of the team’s offseason: whether re-signing Nicolas Claxton, who will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, should be at the top of their priority list.

Claxton, who has had two excellent seasons in a row, is expected to sign a lucrative contract in free agency. However, that does not mean the Nets should be willing to pay his high asking price. However, for the time being, it looks that this is their first strategy for the offseason.

According to a recent rumor, the Nets appear to be prepared to pay Claxton whatever it takes to keep him on.

Without considering potential contract extensions this offseason, Claxton may very well be in position to earn top-10 center money this summer. Assuming Claxton earns the money he’s likely to want on the open market, he’ll earn more than Jarrett Allen and Jakob Poeltl. He’d earn somewhat less than DeAndre Ayton and Bam Adebayo.

While it may appear to be reasonable compensation for Claxton, you have to ask if it would be viewed as a potential error for a team that is regarded as mediocre. Consider this: the Nets may begin the 2024-25 season with $72 million locked up in Mikal Bridges, Cameron Johnson, and Claxton, with Claxton being the richest non-Ben Simmons player.
