BREAKING NEWS: He is back

Kyle Hendricks was set to return to Triple-A Iowa on Sunday for another rehab start. On Saturday, he discovered that he’d be back with the major league squad, facing the Pirates and aiming for a series win in a “need-based” approach, as manager Craig Counsell described it.

There’s no place he’d rather be, as evidenced by his season-best start.

Hendricks returned from the disabled list on Sunday, pitching five innings, allowing only one run and leaving with a lead in the Cubs’ 5-4 series-clinching triumph against the Pirates in 10 innings at PNC Park.

After two days of watching Pirates starters reach speeds of 100 mph or above, Hendricks delivered an old-school, execution-focused beauty, topping out at 90.2 mph. But, because to his ability to keep out of the heart of the plate, he was able to overcome his early-season struggles to pitch his finest start of 2024.

“It’s just so important for us right now with the injuries to have him pitch like that,” Counsell stated. “It was wonderful to watch. I’m delighted for Kyle, above everything.
